potty talk

all of the things i've dreaded doing with mae have been a cinch so far. taking away the binkie was fairly easy--the "binkie fairy" was a hit. the bottle after that was even easier. yes, she cried a little--but overall i'm surprised at how easy it was, especially when i imagined it would be so dramatic.

today we lost mae at costco. we were checking out, and when we turned around she was gone. we were totally frantic. katy, jayson and i split up to look for her and they paged all of the workers with her description. the point of this story isn't that i'm a horrible mother, or how completely frightened we were. the point is where they ultimately found her--

she wandered into the restroom, took off her diaper and was sitting on the toilet. she evidently needed to go potty, and didn't bother to tell us.

should i really be terrified of potty training? am i just psyching myself out of these things?

When you are ready to do it, call me. I looked into it and have come up with a great way to go about doing it. I did it with Jonathan at the end of November so it is still fresh in my mind.

that is so scary and funny at the same time! my brother Jared potty trained himself. It can happen. Don't sweat it. I figured that they wouldn't go to college with a diaper on!

I was surprised at how easy it was to potty train Paige. Don't stress. Sounds like Mae is ready :)

I was so not ready for the challenge with Hazel, seeing as I had another baby to take care of, but she went and potty trained herself. Those kiddos sure know a thing or two.

I've become a big advocate of the 'when they are ready' method. As in, I tried everything I could think of with Seara and she still isn't potty trained ... and Elijah pretty much is. He decided to randomly start asking me to use the toilet about a month ago. I never pushed it, and kept him in diapers, but if he did go I'd give him a smartie. About a week ago he decided he wanted to be potty trained. And in this whole time we've had two accidents. He pretty much trained himself.

And I think it is HILARIOUS that she would go to the bathroom, take off her diaper, and SIT ON THE TOILET! What a crack up! :)

How absolutely terrifying to have lost her. I've lost a kid a time or too with the police involved and everything and it is so scary.

But it is exciting that she wants to learn how to go on the potty! So maybe you should get her started on that and teach her to TELL you when she needs to go (especially when you are out in public)

holy cow - heart attack when Mae gave you the slip. What a good girl though to go to the bathroom herself. Sounds like you don't need to worry about the potty training....she's doing it on her own!

I shouldn't make comments on other people blogs after 11pm, I make NO sense...anyways...If you think she's readdy do it cool turkey. Emma was almost potty trained twice before but I lacked consistency, my mom finally helped me...it's so nice when they use the toilet!!!! I think she's telling you she's ready. You CAN do it.

That's awesome that Mae decided it was time she tried the toilet but scary that she decided to do it at Costco!
I can imagine how freaked out you guys were and I have to say that I would probably have never thought to look in the bathroom. Mae's pretty smart to find the bathroom all by herself!

I'm so glad you found her and how great is it that she's potty training herself?! Way to go Mae!!

Holy moly I would have had a panic attack right there in the middle of the store. There's nothing scarier than losing a child. That happened once with Joanna. Last summer we were at a bbq at a local park and she disappeared for a few minutes. Josh found her in some trees on the far end of the park. Those were the longest few minutes of my life!!

It sounds like she is definitely ready to start potty training! Good luck!
